If the end of the building is narrowed,
the roof also needs to be modified. I left the
roof in one piece, and just trimmed off the corners. As
it turned out, with the Walthers Car Shop kit, that
produces a conflict between the inside corner brickwork
and the skylights, and some filing has to be done.
There is no way to shorten the skylight by
5/32
of an inch along a natural line,
like there was with the window. But
there are several other ways to solve the problem:
- Cut and file to make things fit, like I did. This has the
added advantage of providing support for some
of the inside corner brickwork
if the roof is to be made
removable.
- Cut across the roof and move the end skylight
5/64
of an inch to the side, so it is
centered between the walls. That makes for
some cutting and fitting to make the roof meet
the walls all the way around.
- Make a flat roof instead. A
large plain roof is a good place to spell out the name of
your town in big letters, for the benefit of passing aviators.
- Have only three skylights. Cut
off one skylight's worth of roof, and add flat roof to each end.
